Essential Listening

Each month a member of the teaching faculty assembles a list of recorded music that they feel changed the musical landscape. This month features the selections of guitar instructor Rachel Gentile.

Rachel Gentile
Tom Waits

1. Tom Waits - "Closing Time" - The music is set to a night club theme. With the different assorted songs, this music screams a strong sense of Jazz. With the variety of instrumentation you can really feel the different angles of how Jazz can be formed and written. A style of music I very much show a great respect for.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

2. Trans-Siberian Orchestra -- "Beethoven's Last Night" -- Set to a theatrical style this selection represents classical music with a distorted energy through it. The screaming guitars bring to life classical music with a massive twist. This album is a tease to what this intense group is capable of. If you enjoy this style I also recommend their incredible holiday albums.

Stevie Ray Vaughn - The Sky is Crying

3. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble -- "The Sky is Crying" -- Now here's the blues right in front of you. This takes the blues to a point where you just can't pass. It presents the blues as a very moving and guitar oriented place. With a Texas touch, southern style and deep guitar sounds, this album shows the depth of what can be done through electric blues. It not only has originals but some of the older songs performed in Stevie's unique style.

Duane Eddy

4. Duane Eddy -- "Mr Twangy Guitar" -- Reaching back into the past when guitar playing was simple yet moving. This selection of songs shows you why guitar has grown to such heights. The fun twangy sounds of an old guitar playing these well known selections will really show a different look on music abilities. This album is one that will leave you wanting to listen more.

Christopher Parkening

5. Christopher Parkening Celebrates Segovia -- Take yourself into a place filled with greatness and brilliance. An album consumed with graceful phrasings and surprises in every corner. Through a varied repetoire we can feel every magic moment spread over the fret board. Segovia's unique style of classical guitar can be felt in this celebration. Segovia's unique interpretations played by another great guitarist. You couldn't have asked for a better way of experiencing this type of music. By putting these two musicians together in one album, you're in for a very moving visit with the classical guitar.
