The Minor Chord

Band Instruments

The instrument you choose for your beginning student is a very important element of their musical education. The last thing a beginning student needs is an instrument that adds its own challenges and frustrations to the process of becoming a musician.

Even if you have an unlimited budget, a professional grade instrument is rarely the best choice. Professional instruments are designed for the abilities of a master player, and they are often hard for a beginner to control. Professional instruments also tend to be less sturdy and can easily be knocked out of adjustment by careless handling.

The ideal beginning instrument should be:

  • Reliable, with trouble-free valves, slides, keywork and pads
  • Easy to play, with easy, accurate intonation
  • Sturdy, so that the instrument stays in good playing condition
  • Repairable, to preserve your investment
  • Affordable, to minimize the financial impact on family budgets

To meet these needs, The Minor Chord has chosen band instruments from Hunter Musical Instruments of New York. These are quality imported instruments that satisfy the needs of the beginning student and deliver fantastic value.

These instruments are backed by a one-year warranty on materials and workmanship. The Minor Chord has both on-site and independent technicians to handle adjustments and repairs, and Hunter stocks a complete line of replacement parts at their New York facility should your instrument suffer major damage.

We throughly inspect and set up each instrument before we offer it for sale. Every instrument comes with an instrument-care kit, an ABS or leatherette-covered wood case and a free 90-day checkup. Clarinets and saxophones include an upgrade to a genuine Rico LaVoz or Rico Graftonite mouthpiece, and saxophones also include a padded neck strap.

Doubling Instruments

If you are looking for solid "doubling" instruments that won't break the bank, Hunter brass and woodwinds are a good solution. Besides the more common instruments shown below, Hunter also offers less-common doubling instruments like piccolos, soprano and tenor saxophones, and flugelhorns. You can see and hear Carl playing a Hunter flugelhorn in this video.

Our Instruments

We usually have the following instruments in stock. Other types of instruments can be ordered, most with quick delivery.

Hunter 6456S C Flute

This flute is a Yamaha-style closed-hole instrument with a silver-plated body and a C foot. The pads are US-made, and the keywork is die-cast for durability. We include a flute care kit, a cleaning rod and a sturdy ABS case.

This is a flute that plays easily with good intonation.

Hunter 6458E C Piccolo

This is the perfect instrument for the flute player who wants to start doubling on piccolo. The resin body gives a warmer tone than metal, and is durable for marching band use. Head joint and keys are silver plated.

We include a care kit, cleaning rod, and case.

Hunter 6403NE Bb Clarinet

This clarinet has a matte finish ebonite body for durability and undercut tone holes for excellent intonation. The instrument has 17 nickel plated keys plus 6 rings, a 64mm barrel, a professional-style single screw ligature, and stainless steel springs.

We include a Rico LaVoz step-up mouthpiece for excellent playability and tone, a clarinet care kit, and a sturdy leatherette-covered wood case.

Hunter 6430HL Eb Alto Saxophone

This is a Selmer-style alto saxophone with a clear lacquer body, lacquered keywork, and features not always found on student horns:

  • Eb to high F# key
  • Front F mechanism
  • Quality kid leather pads
  • Left- and right-hand section adjusting screws
  • Rocking table key mechanism with articulated C# adjusting screw
  • Adjustable right-hand thumb rest

We include a step-up Rico Graftonite mouthpiece, a saxophone care kit, a padded strap, and a sturdy leatherette-covered wood case.

Hunter 6435HL Bb Tenor Saxophone

This is a Selmer-style tenor saxophone with a clear lacquer body and lacquered keywork. Like its alto cousin above, it has features not always found on student horns:

  • Eb to high F# key
  • Front F mechanism
  • Quality kid leather pads
  • Left- and right-hand section adjusting screws
  • Rocking table key mechanism with articulated C# adjusting screw
  • Adjustable right-hand thumb rest

We include a step-up Rico Graftonite mouthpiece, a saxophone care kit, a padded strap, and a sturdy leatherette-covered wood case.

Hunter 6418ML Bb Trumpet

The Hunter 6418 Bb Trumpet is a Bach-style instrument with a 0.460 inch bore and a lacquered brass finish. It boasts features not always found on student horns:

  • Thumb hook on the first valve slide
  • Finger ring on the third valve slide
  • Rose brass lead pipe
  • Monel valve pistons for smooth, tight action
  • Two-point valve guides
  • Double main tuning slide braces for durability
  • Two water keys

We include a 7C-size mouthpiece, a trumpet care kit, and a sturdy leatherette-covered wood case.

Hunter 6418MS Bb Trumpet

The Hunter 6418MS Bb trumpet is built to the same specifications as its 6418ML cousin above, except that it has a silver-plated finish. Many players consider the silver finish to give a brighter, clearer tone as compared to the lacquered brass finish.

As with the 6418ML trumpet, we include a 7C-size mouthpiece, a trumpet care kit, and a sturdy leatherette-covered wood case.

Hunter 6500S Bb Pocket Trumpet

We love this horn, so we stock it even though it is not strictly speaking a student instrument. It is pitched the same as a standard trumpet, but the tubing is wrapped more tightly making it very compact. Surprisingly, it still delivers that characteristic bright trumpet tone.

This horn is so portable, you have no excuse for not practicing wherever you are!

The horn has a silver-plated finish, a 0.460 inch bore and a 3-5/8 inch bell. The pistons are made of cupronickel and nickel plated. Two water keys are provided.

We include a 7C-size mouthpiece, a trumpet care kit, and a sturdy ABS case.

Hunter 6420HL Trombone

The Hunter 6420HL is a good beginning trombone. This horn has a 0.500-inch bore, an 8-inch bell, and a gold lacquer finish. The inner slide is seamless brass, nickel plated; the outer slide is yellow brass.

We include a 6-1/2C size mouthpiece, a trombone care kit, a cleaning rod and a featherlight ABS case.
